Why Do I Have Problems Learning From Reading

Reading fictional books (as well chosen novels) is i of the all-time and cheapest means to meliorate your English.

With my own students, I detect the difference in class between those that regularly read novels in English and those that don't. Those that regularly read, improve their English faster and become better exam results.

The big problem is knowing which books to read. But before I advise you how to select the correct books for your level, let's look at why reading in English volition amend your level.

Why reading novels helps your English

Although reading in English will help you to learn new vocabulary and expressions, information technology will too assistance y'all to remember vocabulary and grammatical structures that you take already learnt. Similar with learning to play the guitar, the all-time manner to improve your English language is through practice and repetition.

Reading books in English language besides helps you to practise using the context of a sentence to guess the meaning of words and expressions that yous don't know. Using context to guess meaning is fundamental for both mastering English and remembering new vocabulary.

To know how to apply context to improve your English, read my article on ' how to improve your English language '.

Choosing a book

As I said before, the big problem is choosing the right book for y'all. It needs to be just hard enough that you larn new vocabulary, but not also hard. If you lot choose a book which is too difficult or circuitous for your English language level, you'll become confused, frustrated and stop reading the volume.

How to know if a book is right for y'all

The only way to know if a novel in English language is right for y'all, is to read the first few pages of the book. If you lot don't know the meaning of more than than five words/phrases on each page, then you know that the book is besides difficult for you.

If yous know every give-and-take or expression you have read on the offset few pages of the book, and then the book will exist too easy for you lot (you lot are non going to be learning whatever new vocabulary).

A novel will exist right for you, if on the first few pages you understand the situation (where they are, why they are there, what they are doing etc...), but don't know the pregnant of between two to five words or expressions per folio.

Read the kickoff few pages before you buy

To relieve you money, you should always read the first few pages of any volume/novel y'all desire to read in English before you purchase it.

Although y'all tin go to a book shop/store to do this, the easiest way you can do this is to wait at a book you are thinking of reading/buying at amazon.com. For most books, the website gives a free preview/sample of the offset few pages.

If in that location is a preview/sample of the book, you'll run across 'Await inside' written in a higher place the photo of the book.

To read the first few pages of the volume/novel, click on the photo of the volume and and then go to chapter one.

If the volume has a kindle version, click on the tab for that (it is better to read the words from).

Novels for people learning English language

In addition to reading books written for native speakers of English language, you tin can likewise read books that have been written or adjusted for people learning English language too. These books are called 'readers' and you can choose a book specially for your level of English (east.grand. beginner, intermediate etc...).

Unfortunately, in that location is no 'look inside' option for these types of books/novels on amazon.com. So you either accept to find one in a book shop/store and read the showtime few pages in that location, or buy it online without looking at the first few pages.

Recommend books

To assist y'all choose a book, I have created a list of 10 novels which are suitable for people learning English who have an intermediate or higher level of English.

Read articles in English language as well

In addition to reading novels, y'all should also read online manufactures and news stories (on the BBC). The advantage of doing this is that they are shorter than novels and y'all can acquire vocabulary on a variety of unlike topics.

This is particularly useful for people who are studying to do an examination in English language (e.g. Cambridge FCE, CAE, IELTS etc...), where students need to better their English language vocabulary and knowledge of lots of different topics/subjects to do well in the exam.

The trouble is that information technology can exist difficult to detect an online article that is right for your level.

If you lot prefer to read articles instead of novels or are studying for an English exam, we accept created some eBooks to help people with an intermediate or upper-intermediate level of English improve their reading ability and vocabulary.
